Working the Poll: The BM Top 25

So many hacks love to use college football’s transitive property of equality. It is a lazy way to compare teams and of course most writers are as lazy as they are boring. This early in the season, there isn’t much opportunity to use it with teams that beat other teams. Too many teams are unbeaten right now and the conference battles haven’t unfolded. But that doesn’t deter the scribes. They still break out the formula to show how smart they are when comparing vastly different squads. The best example so far is Oregon and Florida and their shared common opponent in Tennessee. Because Oregon won 48-13 and the Gators squeked by 31-17, Oregon is vastly superior to Florida and deserves to be a national title contender.

Now we aren’t saying Oregon isn’t better than Florida. Hell, we’ve had them ranked above Florida for a few weeks now. The Ducks may very well be the best team in the Pac-10 and are a legitimate BCS contender (although we have a strong feeling the Ducks are overrated at this point). But their game against Tennessee one week cannot be compared to Florida’s game the following week. Scores and yards leave out so much of the other things that make up a football contest. So don’t fall for the lazy man’s trap. You are better than that; the hacks sadly are not.

1. Bama

5. TCU
6. Boise State
7. Texas
8. Florida
9. Oklahoma
10. Arkansas
11. South Carolina
12. LSU
13. Wisconsin
14. Utah

22. West Virginia
23. USC
24. Michigan State
25. Oregon State

A couple footnotes… it isn’t going out on a limb to suggest Alabama is really good. Ohio State, Nebraksa, TCU, Boise State and Texas all seem formidable contenders. Oklahoma and Florida are the enigmas right now… high preseason rankings but shaky performances at times. The SEC boasts four teams – Ark, SC, LSU, Auburn – that are probably not as good as they seem right now. Once the bloodbath that is the SEC schedule meat grinder runs its course, all four are likely to be saddled with 2-4 losses. Despite the turmoil at Southern Cal, the Pac-10 appears to be pretty frisky this year with Stanford, Arizona and Oregon State likely to push Oregon for the Rose Bowl. And lastly, Michigan State should be ranked higher, just so Mark Dantonio’s balls have more room to hang. Those fucking things are huge. And surely they will help him recover from the minor heart attack he suffered Saturday night. Get well Coach.
