Stone Mountain, GA (Stephensen) Running Back Mike Davis has decommitted from the Florida Gators today, after a tumultuous couple of days.
Davis (5’10, 200 lbs.) is a Rivals 100 Running Back, ranked 6th overall at his position.
Davis initially committed to the Gators on his birthday February 19th, 2011. Davis joined Seffner, FL (Armwood) Running Back Matt Jones (6’2″, 200 lbs.)
However, over the past few weeks, mainly past week, things began to change and go sour between the Gators and Mike Davis.
Davis has been vocal about a few things the Gators have done and has not been afraid to share them on his Twitter (@Mike28Davis).
On October 31st, Davis initially expressed concern with the following:
@Mike28Davis: Florida recruiting other running backs?
The answer was and still is, yes. The Gators are still actively pursuing Raleigh, NC RB Keith Marshall (5’11”, 190 lbs.) This obviously did not make Mike Davis happy as he sees him and Jones as enough.
Things seemed to be fine for Florida after that initially tweet, even visiting the Gators since.
However, on Wednesday (11/30/11), things went south again.
@Mike28Davis: Wow ok florida
Then, on Friday (12/2/11), Mike Davis’ brother James Davis, current RB of the Detroit Lions tweeted:
@JDavis_41: Little brother on his Official visit to Tennessee. I hope he has a great time.
@JDavis_41: Decommitted on the low…. lol
These tweets sent Gator Nation into a frenzy. James Davis clarified his tweets later by saying:
@JDavis_41: No my brother
@Mike28davis is still committed to UF. I wasnt referring to that ppl.
It is hard to believe in hindsight that James Davis was not referring to his brothers decommitment.
Then finally, today (12/4) Mike Davis officially announced his change:
@Mike28Davis: No longer committed to florida
While Florida may still be in the running for Davis, it seems Davis has moved on. Davis has already visited Tennessee, and has expressed interest in Florida State, South Carolina, Alabama and Miami.
Davis’ situation has a multitude of factors in play. The recruitment of Marshall obviously did not make him happy and then a few run-ins with him and the staff made things a bit more tense.
