As we countdown the days until the Gators vs Miami of Ohio line gets announced (my system has them as 42.5 point favorites), we will take a look at some preseason gambling lines. First up is the odds to win the SEC West. It’s a pretty simple story this year. Defending SEC (and therefore BCS) Champion Alabama opens as a huge favorite to repeat their trip to the Georgia Dome. The usual suspects are hanging around in case Bama slips.
LSU, Auburn: 9/2
Mississippi State: 12/1
Ole Miss: 15/1
As you can see, Arkansas is the team getting a little preseason buzz. Everyone loves Ryan Mallett and has conveniently forgotten that Bobby Petrino is evil. People are marking down September 25th as the date when the division gets decided. Well, smart bettors like you and me aren’t, but Scotty Thurman has already asked for the night off from Pizza Hut so he can root on his Hogs. Arkansas will be reeling from a hard fought game in Sanford Stadium the week before while Bama will be coming off a game at Duke (pronounced Bye). Aside from that, Alabama is the more talented team and will win this one easily.
LSU and Auburn are the value bets of the group if you can figure out which one will make a run at the title. Bama will have to go into Death Valley to take down LSU. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Bama is the only team of significance that they play at home. Road trips to Auburn. Florida, and Arkansas will prove to be their undoing. That and Jordan Jefferson.
Auburn has the much smoother schedule. Their away games are at Kentucky, MSU, and Ole Miss plus they miss out on Florida this year. As usual the Iron Bowl will be the deciding game out west.
Lastly, Mississippi State and Mississippi will be fielding teams this year. They have uniforms and everything. It’s really nice. Just watch Blind Side while a buddy rings a cowbell in your ears and you will have more fun than you will watching the Egg Bowl at seasons end.
Let me set the record straight here. I just talked up Auburn as the bet and that is the way to go if you like betting underdogs (and we all do) or you just dislike Alabama (and we all do). But for this prop bet us wise guys are gonna stay away. Bama wins this division going away. There is a reason you have to put up 300 to win 100. We have better uses for our money than to tie it up for 4 months on a heavy favorite.
